Top 9 Added Costs of Offshore Sourcing of Die Castings

      1. Market share at risk

Companies will create competitors for their die casting products by going overseas. Your confidential files could get into the wrong hands and may be released to your competitors giving them information to your product specifications and specialized tooling even marketing info.

      2. Technology at Risk

Protect your technology! Some offshore suppliers will sell your technology secrets to your competitors overseas and domestically.

      3. Miscommunication

Extra costs are built in due to frequent miscommunication which can prevent suppliers from implementing the correct die design changes and assuring their proper implementation. The factors of distance, language, culture come into play

      4. Long Lead Times

A problem with offshore outsourcing is that the production lead times delays are fairly common. You could have a problem if your die casting product demand increases or decreases due to the fact overseas supplies commitments can't easily alter and are less flexible then domestic suppliers. Its virtually impossible to have short term cancellations with offshore suppliers.

      5. Shorter Tool Life

Diecast die steel that goes untreated or is uncertified will have a much shorter tool life. Sometimes a reason that the cost of a die cast die or mold is so low is due to the fact that it has no guarantees of die cast tool life. What was supposed to be cheaper will in return cost more due to the fact a die failure can occur after only a few thousand shots.

      6. Product Failure

There is a higher risk of product failure with offshore die casting companies. While they may offer lower prices it could end up costing you much more later down the road for lower quality a die cast product. They might have lower prices due to the fact they may use off spec metal alloys that are uncertified. This leads to a higher risk of product failure which can cause degrading or breaking when such components are incorporated into your products.

      7. Paying before approving products

Most of the offshore die casting companies will require advance payment even before you review shipment quality and quantity.

      8. False certification claims

Many offshore die casting companies will claim they are ISO certified, because their country of origin does not persecute or try to stop fraud products.

     9. What Standards do they use

What standards do they use for production and inspection? Die Casting companies in America worby       the standards provided and approved by the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) . Offshore die casting companies most likely do not, which makes it hard to tell if the die casting parts you are getting are really certified or even toxic in some cases.

Hidden Costs of Off-shore Outsourcing & True Horror Stories
Reported by the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA)

A computer printer manufacturer in the west coast requested a quote for die castings from a company located in Taiwan and decided to choose them as their supplier for die castings because their quote was 50 percent lower than the domestic supplier. The company in Taiwan reported many problems with the die casting die and initial castings resulted in a 12 month delay of producing the die cast parts. When the Taiwanese tooling was finally approved new part prices were quoted at 42% higher than originally agreed upon. With all the added costs of doing business overseas the computer printer company said it would have been cheaper to ask the domestic die casting company to produce the die castings.

A power saws and snow blowers producer decided it would be cheaper to use a diecasting supplier from overseas and aggressively sought out a “less expensive die casting company.” Unfortunately for the saw and snow blowers company they discovered many issues with their tooling (poor design and workmanship) , which resulted in extensive welding on die cores and other major tooling repairs. What seemed to be a cheaper choice in the overseas business is now a headache for the company which is very concerned about the die cast tool life. The purchasing agent added that management is not optimistic.

A manufacturer of small appliances in the Midwest was attracted to an offshore die casting toolmaker company that offered shorter tool manufacturing time. Seeking to gain a competitive edge over their competitors this was something that lured them to do business with the offshore die casting toolmaker company. However there were changes that needed to be made on the design for new components. What was suppose to be a shorter tool manufacturing time resulted in long delays due to miscommunication about revisions. Not only did they not save time by going to the offshore company it ended up costing them more money than to have initially hired a domestic diecasting toolmaker.

A domestic hardware supplier that hired a Taiwan die casting company to cast their zinc refrigerator door handles was sued by a manufacturer of restaurant kitchen equipment their domestic client because the zinc doors handles which were produced by the Taiwan die casting company “pulled right off the units“. Unfortunately the door handles diecasted in Taiwan were so poorly designed that the handles could not be replaced and the entire door had to be replaced instead. The domestic hardware supplier refused to cover the costs of the door handles and other expenses like replacing the doors thus the reason for them being sued by their domestic client. The hardware supplier who hired the Taiwan die casting company sees itself as the victim unable to recoup its losses from the overseas die casting company who produced the defective zinc door handle. As a result all relationships have been severed and it seems like nobody turned out a winner.

Don't let this happen to you.
These are only a few stories of some of the hidden costs of outsourcing to offshore companies but there many others out there.
